Świętokrzyskie: A Guide for Magic Seekers. Mountains, Witches, and the Polish Tuscany.

Świętokrzyskie is a land shrouded in mystery. It is here, according to legends, that witches' sabbaths took place, and robber bands slept in caves. But Świętokrzyskie is not just myths.

It is a region of geological treasures, idyllic landscapes of Ponidzie, and cities that delight with architecture. If you are looking for a place for "slow travel", where history connects with nature in the most mystical way, this guide is for you.

1. Świętokrzyskie Mountains: The Oldest in Poland

These mountains remember times when dinosaurs did not yet walk the earth. They are low, gentle, but extremely atmospheric.

  • Holy Cross and Stone Runs (Gołoborza): This is a must-see. The ascent to Łysa Góra (the second largest peak) leads through the Fir Forest, which Żeromski admired so much. At the top, you will see stone runs – unique rock debris fields and the oldest Polish sanctuary, where relics of the Holy Cross Tree are kept.
  • Łysica: The highest peak of the range. The approach is short but intense. It is the perfect place for a morning trek to catch the first rays of the sun.

2. Ponidzie: The Polish Tuscany

The south of the region is Ponidzie. The landscape changes here beyond recognition – it is flat, steppe-like, sunny.

  • Nida River: One of the warmest and cleanest rivers in Poland. Kayaking on the Nida is pure relaxation – the current is lazy, and the banks are overgrown with meadows full of flowers.
  • Stradów Stronghold: A monumental, early medieval stronghold from which a view of the undulating fields extends. It looks like the "Windows Wallpaper" in a live version.

3. Sandomierz: Little Rome

Located on seven hills, with underground routes and loess gorges – Sandomierz is a pearl. Instead of crowding in the Market Square (although it is beautiful!), we recommend a walk through Queen Jadwiga's Gorge. It is a deep ravine carved in loess rock, where tree roots create a fancy vault overhead. It is also worth visiting the Pepper Mountains – the oldest mountains in Poland, famous for wild roses and a view of the Vistula.

4. Raj Cave and Chęciny Castle

Near Kielce, you will find two treasures.

  • Raj Cave: Considered the most beautiful karst cave in Poland. The number of stalactites and stalagmites per square meter is stunning here (remember to book tickets in advance!).
  • Chęciny Castle: Ruins with three characteristic towers towering over the area. From the top, you can see the panorama of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, and night sightseeing with ghosts is an attraction not only for children.

5. Bartek Oak: Witness of History

In Zagnańsk grows the most famous tree in Poland. The Bartek Oak is about 700 years old (although legends say a thousand). Despite the passage of time and many storms, it still puts out green leaves. Standing under it, you feel the power of nature and the passage of time. It is the perfect place for a moment of reflection.

6. Świętokrzyskie Cuisine: Zalewajka and Wines

It is a region of simple but distinct flavors.

  • Świętokrzyskie Zalewajka: Soup on sourdough, with forest mushrooms, potatoes, and bacon. It is thick, sour, and aromatic.
  • Sandomierz Wines: The area around Sandomierz, thanks to loess soils and sunshine, has become a wine basin. It is worth visiting a local vineyard, tasting Polish wine and local cheeses.

Summary

Świętokrzyskie is a region that charms. Literally and figuratively. It is the perfect destination for those who want to feel the spirit of old legends, rest in the bosom of gentle nature, and escape from the big city noise.
